On the Monday of one of the Gophers’ biggest recruiting weekends of the year, Summer Splash, P.J. Fleck and his staff were able to get the party started early. 2024 Chanhassen, Minnesota EDGE Sam Macy committed to the Gophers after being offered over the weekend. He holds top offers from Army, Navy, North Dakota, South Dakota and Air Force. Listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, 247sports ranks him as the 9th best player in MN and he now becomes the 7th in-state commitment for the Maroon & Gold in the 2024 class.

Sam Macy broke onto the scene after an impressive junior campaign for Chanhassen High School. Playing at outside linebacker and tight end, he recorded 32 total tackles, 7 TFLs, 3 sacks and even 1 fourced fumble. He led the Storm to a conference title and section runner-up finish last season. He picked up his first offer (South Dakota) in September in the middle of the season, while North Dakota and all three service academies offered him in the spring. After attending the Gophers annual Spring camp over the weekend he was shortly offered and then committed to Minnesota shortly after.
Listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds Macy is a bit undersized to be a true four-technique defensive end. He played as a true 4-3 OLB last season for Chanhassen, a position that suited him well with his current skillset. Like most players his age, he has plenty of time to grow into a Big Ten frame, but he has a very similar physical profile to that of a player like Thomas Rush. Macy is a very explosive athlete that relies on his speed rather than his strength. He will likely not be an imediate contributor, but he is more than capable of handling a serious role throughout his career.
I feel like a broken record, but P.J. Fleck is continuing to prove that he has closed the borders when it comes to recruiting. Sam Macy now gives the Gophers commitments from seven on the top nine Minnesota players in the 2024 class and the remaining two seem to be seriously considering the Maroon & Gold. Macy is likely not a player that will make or break the Gophers’ class, but you cannot hit a homerun with every swing of the bat. He is a player that clearly wants to be in Minnesota he likes P.J. Fleck and he is bought in, those are the type of players that you want to fill your roster with.
247sports now ranks the Gophers’ class 14th-best nationally. With their annual Summer Splash recruiting event begining this weekend and lasting until the 17th/18th, there will be plenty of oppurtinities for the Fleck and his staff to improve that number soon. They currently have 15 hard commitments for 2024 and 2023's class had 21, so I would be sure to keep an eye out for plenty of more recruiting news over the next two weeks.
