Anime has some of the coolest and most creative weapons of any medium. While shonen anime is the first type that normally comes to mind when thinking of weapons and a large portion of anime's best-designed weapons hail from shonen series, there are others from seinen and fantasy anime, as well.

Some of anime's coolest weapons are incredibly large and imposing, like Soul's scythe form from Soul Eater being larger than its wielder, or Nicholas D. Wolfwood's human-sized cross from Trigun. Others are unassuming everyday items, like guitars or notebooks, that surprisingly make for some of the most deadly weapons in their respective universes.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica's magical girls fight using magical weapons, and veteran Mami Tomoe makes use of a barrage of magical muskets. What makes this especially impressive is how she creates them, as Mami's actual weapon is her ribbon rather than the muskets she summons.

Using her magical ribbons, Mami creates all of her guns from scratch and technically has the ability to create other types of weapons, though she's never shown doing so. In one of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica video games, Mami admits she tried to make more modern guns than her muskets, but that it wasn't possible with magic.

A seinen with one of anime's wackiest plots, FLCL combines a grounded coming-of-age story with galactic forces and world-altering threats. Nothing about the FLCL universe feels normal, and Haruko's weapon of choice is one of the series' stranger aspects, being one of several guitars.

These guitars function more like Soul Eater-style weapons than actual instruments, as they're near-indestructible and can be modified to perform other combative functions. Haruko's original bass guitar has a saw attachment and also functions as both a hoverboard and a gun.

Beyond the Boundary's Mirai Kuriyama hails from a bloodline of warriors that have blood-manipulation abilities, and Mirai can construct her blood into various objects. She's most commonly seen making swords or shields for combat but is theoretically capable of forming her blood into anything.

The only limiting factor to Mirai's hemokinesis is being limited by her own blood volume, so she can't construct anything bigger than herself. As an added, deadly bonus, Mirai's blood is acidic and can burn or dissolve her opponents if they come into contact with it.

Each assigned to and only operable by a specific member of the Public Safety Bureau, the Dominator from Psycho-Pass is a high-tech pistol that has multiple functions. Its base form is a non-lethal mode used to knock out targets, so they can safely be brought in.

Both of the Dominator's other main functions are deadly, with its Lethal Eliminator mode firing explosive blasts that can instantly kill targets or destroy limbs, depending on where the Eliminator is aimed. The Destroy Decomposer completely destroys all traces of organic matter and is typically used to destroy armor or break through structures.

Even when the true nature of Kill La Kill's scissor blades is unknown, they're still incredibly cool. Ryuko's red half-scissor blade is the most iconic, as it's the first viewers are introduced to and also represents her unending determination to solve the mystery behind her father's murder.

The truth about Kill La Kill's scissor blades is revealed later on, and they're the only thing aside from Satsuki's sword that can cut through Life Fibers. Without the larger-than-life scissor blades, Ryuko never would have been able to stand up to Ragyo and her plan to use Life Fibers to consume humanity.

Anime That Would Never Work in Live-Action

Trigun's larger-than-life cross, primarily wielded by Nicholas D. Wolfwood, is called the Punisher. When not in use, it's wrapped up and looks like a regular cross, but is actually equipped with both a machine gun and a rocket launcher. There are numerous Punishers in Trigun's universe, with two others besides Wolfwood's being shown throughout the series.

The Punisher's side arms in Trigun's manga contain the ammunition for the machine gun, enabling Wolfwood to keep them together for easy access. Due to its size, the Punisher is incredibly heavy and can only be wielded by individuals with superhuman strength.

In a world like Attack On Titan's, where horseback is the primary method of transportation, the military's Omni-Directional Mobility Gear stands out as a powerful technological advancement. Commonly referred to as just ODM Gear, it allows users a high range of movement through forests and cities at incredibly high speeds.

The most iconic weapon typically used as part of Attack On Titan's ODM Gear is the sharp dual-blades, which easily slice through Titans' weak points. As time goes on and the heroes start facing other, more advanced threats, Thunder Spears and guns are also used as part of the ODM Gear.

People possessing the power to transform into cool weapons is Soul Eater's entire premise, with the most iconic being Meister Maka's scythe and Soul's weapon form. As a weapon, Soul takes the form of a red-and-black scythe larger than its wielder.

Soul's scythe form is ordinary but can be enhanced through other means, like his Black Blood or successfully activating Soul Resonance with his meister. The latter lets Soul's scythe take on several different forms, which enhance the scythe's power and increase its effectiveness against magic beings or immortals.

Most Popular Characters In Anime History

The titular notebook from Death Note isn't a traditional weapon but possesses the power to essentially turn its user into a god. Alongside just the name and face of the victim, the Death Note can kill in any conceivable way, first only being used to cause heart attacks until Light quickly gets more creative.

The Death Note is especially terrifying because it's an ordinary-looking notebook that can be used from anywhere, and its user doesn't have to be in person to kill their target as long as they have their information. If its user takes the Shinigami Eye deal, they can learn someone's name just by looking at them in person, or through photographs or recordings, making the notebook even easier to use.

Chainsaw Man's core concept revolves around its characters contracting with devils, to gain power in order to fight other devils. The Chainsaw Devil merges itself with the protagonist, Denji, granting him the ability to transform into Chainsaw Man, sprouting chainsaws from his arms and an additional chainsaw from his head in the manga.

Before this, the Chainsaw Devil takes the form of Pochita, an adorable orange pup with a chainsaw blade coming out of its head. It's wielded using a black handle on its head and is incredibly small and cute when compared to Pochita's true form, a four-armed human-like devil with five total protruding chainsaws.
